Great Ocean Road
The Great Ocean Road is an amazing road trip
that no visitor to Victoria can afford to miss.
The Great Ocean Road is a very scenic
drive that takes you down the west coast of Victoria . The trip
begins at Torquay and proceeds along what has to be some of the
most stunning natural scenery in Australia till it reaches the
end at the Princess Highway.
Sights Along the Great Ocean Road
The scenic drive along Melbourne's Great Ocean
Road is peppered with interesting landmarks and
natural formations including waterfalls and rain forests. Take
a break in many of the wonderful villages that you find along
the way.
The Twelve Apostles
Around 6 hours into the Great Ocean
Road drive you come to the Twelve Apostles which
have been carved out of limestone over millions of years. The
scene is incredibly beautiful especially around sunset.
The Twelve Apostles are a part of the Port Campbell National
Park has plenty of other natural rock formations that are also
very interesting, just less well known.
Shipwreck Coast
The treacherous Shipwreck coast along the Great
Ocean Road has numerous plaques outlining the
tragic tales of the numerous shipwrecks in the area. On Wreck
Beach you still find anchors as the last remnants of these
unfortunate on visitors and more information is available at
the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum in Warnambool.
Melbourne’s Great Ocean Road Lighthouses and
Lightstation
Because of the very treacherous nature of the coast along
the Great Ocean Road the construction of
light houses to guide incoming vessels to safety required.
Today you can visit the Cape Otway Lightstation, Split Point
Lighthouse, and Cape Nelson Lightstation which were all
constructed in the 19th century.
Historical Buildings along the Great Ocean Road
Portland, Port Fairy and Queenscliff all have impressive
historic architecture including churches, mansions and 19th
century military fortresses.
Check out Portarlington Mill, Barwon Park, Barwon Grange,
and Heights Heritage House and Garden which are some of the
best examples.
